    Consumer Rights & FCRA Basics

    • Bureaus must investigate disputes within 30 days.
    • Inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information must be corrected or deleted.

    What is a Factual Dispute?

    A factual dispute challenges specific data points on a credit report—such as dates, balances, or statuses—that contradict the furnisher's own records or reporting standards.

    The Debt Validation Process

    Under the FDCPA, consumers can request that a collection agency validate a debt. If they cannot provide sufficient proof, they may be required to cease collection efforts.

    CFPB Complaint Process

    When data furnishers or bureaus fail to conduct a reasonable investigation, consumers can escalate their concerns to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

    Hard Inquiry Disputes

    An inquiry can only remain on your report if you provided permissible purpose. Unauthorized inquiries can be disputed and potentially removed.
